“Every [OCBC] member of all ages has taught me the teachings of Buddha through their communications, actions, and silence. They continue to teach and help me on the short path we share.” — Earl King

What is your favorite OCBC festival food?

A bowl of OCBC’s hearty Oden.

Where did you grow up?

Alabama, USA

Who is an inspiration or role model for you?

My father, John Wesley King, was my role model.  Although he lived through the Jim Crow Laws, he managed to self-educate himself, became a supervisor at Reynolds Metal Company, an entrepreneur, and was elected the first African American City Council member in my hometown.  Most notable was his dedication to raising his children as a single dad and ensuring that I attended college.

What was the most significant moment for you during the last two years?

The most significant moment for me during the past two years was learning to live with the COVID-19 virus and its mutations.  This experience has taught me several lessons on the importance of interdependence in my life and the lives around me.  The virus changed the existence of all living things, and it solidified the truth that all organisms are one in the web of interdependence of time, space, water, and air.

What OCBC activities do you participate in?

Being a member of OCBC’s Board of Directors, the long-range planning committee, the go green committee, and the OCBC development committee has been extremely rewarding.  It is also an honor to be an Assistant Scoutmaster and former Committee Chair for OCBC Boy Scout Troop 578.  Troop 578 comprises bright scouts who allow me to share in their scouting journey and their path as compassionate leaders.

How has OCBC influenced the way you approach life?

OCBC’s influence has given me the strength and confidence to meet each day with the outlook of it being a good day.

What does a Strong Sangha mean to you?

Friendship and lifelong community relationships. The Sangha keeps me connected with OCBC.  Every member of all ages has taught me the teachings of Buddha through their communications, actions, and silence.  They continue to teach and help me on the short path we share.
