Shin Reader - Buddhism on Air

OCBC’s Buddhist Education Center is proud to announce the Kindle publication of Buddhism on Air: Televised Kaleidoscope of a Growing Religion by Kenneth Tanaka. In this edition of the Shin Reader, Janis Hirohama gives us her impression of Buddhism on Air.

Buddhism on Air is indeed a kaleidoscope of the beautiful, vibrant, and constantly-evolving face of Buddhism. The book covers many topics, ranging from the life of Shakyamuni to basic doctrines such as the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, from Buddhist art to “nightstand Buddhists.” There’s even a chapter on Buddhist humor!

Although the author is a Jodo Shinshu minister, the book is not limited to any one school of Buddhism. Here, you can find essays and interviews with practitioners and experts representing a variety of traditions. Each chapter is a quick read of five pages or less, written in clear, down-to-earth language. Buddhism on Air is not only a great source of information on the history and doctrines of Buddhism but also shows how the Buddhist teachings are relevant to our everyday lives and concerns.

This book is for both those who want to learn the basics of Buddhism and those who are seeking deeper understanding and could be a helpful resource for Dharma School teachers and parents. —Janis Hirohama
